    Gather round ye children, for I shall tell you a tale of why you should never send your loved ones, or anyone to Elkhart Rehab I went into Elkhart Rehab center yesterday to put in an app, since they said they were hiring. I accidentally parked in the back. The place looked a little old, a little run down, but maybe it was nice on the inside. No, it was not. I walked into the back as someone was walking out, no one questioned who I was or what I was doing there. I walked into the main hallway, and realized the lay out. One long hallway, with a dining hall in the middle. The light overhead lights were yellowed, dimmed and a few of them randomly flickered. The floor itself was dirtied and un kept. I saw two elderly citizens sitting in wheelchairs just left in the hall, one was facing the wall, the other down the corridor, neither had an aid nearby. The rooms themselves were small and split into two sections. More dim lights, and unkempt floors, each room had two bolted flats screen TV's that all strangely enough had judge joe brown on them. As if the management had decided that instead of staff or cleaning, they would just buy a bunch of TV's and call it that. The residents in their roomd looked dirty and had the off cast stares. Some watched TV. Some just existed. There was no activities for them, no day room, just their rooms, and the dining hall. I continued walking down the hall, not one of the few staff paying attention to me. Med carts were left open and unattended, with unlabeled pill cups left for anyone to grab. The other end of the hall had a few physical therapists working with people, It was the only area that looked clean and well kept. Parts of that hall also reeked of stale Urine with the occasional sticky spot on the floor. Guys, you know that truck stop urine stickiness? Yeah imagine your grandmother living in it. The dining hall was in the middle of the wings, it wasn't anything remarkable, dark and dingy like the rest of the place. The Nurses station was full of nurses sitting and chatting, still no one had noticed or cared to ask why I was there. What if my mother was there and I came in to check on her? I walked into the front desk reception area, and no one was there. I stood and waited for 10 minutes, no one came. This isn't a rehab facility, this is the nursing home that you always see in horror films, the one you worry about when you think about getting old. It's a sarcophagus for the living, and a testament to our own societal neglect of the elderly.
