    My husband had a massive stroke Thanksgiving 2010. By early 2011 he was ready to move from acute care to residential rehab. Even though we live in a different area of Maine, we decided to put him into RiverRidge. The rehab sessions were high-quality. Patients were encouraged to get out and about in their wheelchairs. Socialization was encouraged. The actual layout was friendly, with the nurses station in the middle of patient traffic. Because we lived far away, my husband needed to be placed for a short time in a facility closer to home in order to do home visits and finalize discharge. What a difference! In the nearby facility, patients were expected to stay in their rooms (even for meals) unless they had a scheduled rehab session. The overall vibe of this place was, frankly, just mean. With one exception, the rehab sessions were perfunctory and distracted. This was not a caring place. After the bad experience in the local facility, we were even more grateful that we had put my husband into RiverRidge, giving him the best possible foundation. The tradeoff of being able to visit fewer times per week versus excellence of care was definitely worth it. I hope RiverRidge is as good today as it was back in 2011.
