    Our father sustained a stroke and we had him at a nursing home facility further away from our home. We needed a nursing home closer to home. We were given a guided tour of Belvedere Nursing home by the director and everything looked fine at the areas he showed us. We placed our father at this facility. WHAT A HORRIBLE MISTAKE. Our father could not speak, eat, walk, etc... On the first day of admission we visited, they could not locate our father. After 20 minutes of worried disbelief, they located him in a wing that they thought had no patients. He was admitted the day prior. Who checked on him until we arrived in the morning? THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN OUR WARNING TO AVOID THIS FACILITY. We visited every day for hours. If we could have ,we would have slept there to assure his safety.(this was not permitted via policy). We arrived several mornings to find him totally naked, wedged between his bed and wall a/c unit. full of feces from his diaper up to his face. A full tray of food with hot coffee in front of him (he couldnt eat - had a feeding tube) I approached the director who said we are busy. One day after finding our father on the floor with the alarm sounding we waited 25 minutes (unable to pick him up ourselves - we cradled him in our arms)before a nurse aide came. 25 minutes. We arranged to have him IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM BELVEDERE. Our father stayed there less than 10 days which was 10 days too many. THIS FACILITY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.Other patients showed signs of obvious neglected. We were there every day. We brought this to the attention of the director who had no explaination. The same conditions existed day after day. God help the other patients, since they have limited advocacy. We hired an in-house nurse and we had family assistance. We were so occupied taking care of him that we truly wanted to retain a lawyer for such GROSS NEGLIGENCE of patients at Belvedere. Our father was our number one concern so getting involved with legal dealings at that time was impossible. Our father has now passed. WE will and will continue to voice our experiences at Belvedere. We kept a journal from day one of the stroke until our father passed. This including the horrendous care at Belvedere. We have now started to visit nursing homes to be advocates for these dear people. Please try to do the same, and if you see neglect as we have, report it. Look around if you are in need of a facility. Ask for referrals from people you know. Don't just go by the guided tour. We have seen facilities doing wonderful work. If you are in a crisis and need a facility, try to bring an advocate with you during this trying time. Our loved ones deserve it.
